01 · Lean Manufacturing: principles and applications
Lean Manufacturing organizes production to deliver more efficiently, with fewer losses and fewer interruptions. Rooted in the Toyota Production System, it relies on flow, built-in quality, standard work, and continuous improvement.
It's not a toolbox but a coherent system: each principle reinforces the others to make flow steady and performance sustainable.
02 · Just-in-Time: produce at the right time
Just-in-Time means producing only what is needed, when it is needed, in the quantity needed. You pull production from actual demand rather than pushing inventory in anticipation.
Done well, JIT exposes problems where they occur: without inventory to hide them, the system must be reliable, which forces improvement.
03 · Jidoka: build quality into the system
Jidoka builds quality directly into the production system instead of detecting defects at the end. When an abnormality appears, the system detects it, stops, and addresses it immediately.
This prevents defects from propagating downstream and turns each stop into an opportunity to learn and make the process more reliable.
04 · Standard work: the foundation of improvement
Standard work defines the best-known way at a given point in time to perform an activity, in a clear, shared way. Far from freezing things, it serves as a stable reference from which to improve.
Without a standard, there is no measurable improvement: you can only progress against a base known to all.
05 · Flow, WIP and lead time
System performance depends on the quality of its flows. When WIP increases and interruptions multiply, lead time lengthens and responsiveness drops.
Reducing WIP and smoothing flow shortens lead time, frees up cash, and improves the ability to respond quickly to actual demand.
06 · TRG / OEE: how to use it intelligently
TRG (Taux de Rendement Global), or OEE, measures the real effectiveness of a production system by combining availability, performance, and quality. It is a loss revealer, not a score to maximize at all costs.
Used wisely, it points to the true causes of loss; misused, it drives overproduction or machine-level optimization at the expense of overall flow.
07 · Metrics to track
In repetitive environments, you manage flow and quality at the source, not just machine output:
- Lead time and WIP level
- TRG / OEE read as a loss revealer
- First-pass quality (defects detected/escaped)
- Adherence to standard work
- Flow reliability (breaks, waiting, stoppages)
- Adherence to actual demand (JIT vs inventory)

Does Lean Manufacturing apply outside the factory?
Yes. Anywhere processes repeat — back office, services, logistics — the principles of flow, built-in quality, and standard work apply to information flow.
Does Just-in-Time make production fragile?
JIT requires a reliable system, but it doesn't mean zero inventory everywhere. Well designed, it exposes and corrects weaknesses instead of hiding them behind stock.
Does standard work constrain teams?
No: it sets the best-known method at a point in time as the basis for improvement. Teams update it whenever they find a better way.
Should you aim for the highest possible TRG?
No. TRG is a loss revealer, not an absolute target. Maximizing it machine by machine can harm overall flow and drive overproduction.
Where to start to improve flow?
Start by making WIP visible and measuring lead time. Reducing WIP and interruptions is often the fastest lever for responsiveness.
